If you have decided that you want to find a job or launch into a new career in sustainability or work towards a more just society -it can be hard to know where to look. Certainly you need to network, and can go directly to organisations you want to work for. As many operate with volunteers that can be a good way to start - to prove your worth and get some relevant work experience. It is likely though, that you will have to cast the net a bit wider. You can look on general job boards like Seek online, under Community Development or by using particular keywords of interest. You will also want to visit (and Bookmark!) Ethical Jobs. Ethical Jobs is a relative newcomer to the online job boards scene, and shows an impressive line-up of jobs that may be deemed "ethical".
Ethical Jobs describes their job offerings displayed as:
- Any job in an organisation or company where the organisation or company as a whole is actively contributing to a more equitable, more just or more sustainable world,
- or a job within any organisation or company where the job itself is largely focused on creating a more equitable, more just or more sustainable world.
Fair enough! And well worth a look and regular revisits if you are researching just what type of ethical jobs exist. www.ethicaljobs.com.au
Another great resource can be found at www.probonoaustralia.com.au. Pro Bono Australia includes jobs, volunteer opportunities as well as up to date news on the NFP sector.
Also, US based site, www.idealist.org has some fantastic resources on how to break into the not-for-profit sector, as well as wise words concerning managing to profit within the not-for-profit sector. As a wise man remarked to me "It's not-for-profit, not for poverty!"
