Like professional athletes, classically trained ballet dancers spend an enormous amount of time training, rehearsing and performing while keeping their bodies in peak condition. However, unlike the aforementioned athletes, their salaries are minimal and the dedicated resources available for career development during and beyond their performance years in Australia are currently limited or in most cases non existent.
Career Development services and a Career Transition program is made available to the West Australian Ballet pro bono, as a part of Skillsbank through Leadership WA and Lois Keay-Smith, Fellow of Leadership WA (2012 Signature program participant) and Director of Career Wisdom.
Lois is a trained career counsellor , coach and career transition consultant and has worked in many facets of career development and transition, including being contracted to the Rugby Union Players Association in Perth Western Australia, assisting players of the Western Force rugby to develop their off field careers and transition after playing professional rugby.
With a varied case load that includes executives, transitioning managers and staff facing redundancy as well as voluntary career changers, Lois now offers her services to dancers at WA Ballet who are able to start making plans and incremental progress towards their next brilliant career, after dance. Whilst some will remain associated with dance, others may choose roles connected to dance (eg. arts management, marketing) whilst others seek alternate careers entirely. This all takes planning, will, effort, time, and of course, money.
We welcome offers of support for the dancers, in particular in the following areas:
- Work experience or paid internships in companies
- Training courses or scholarships for training and education
- Mentoring and/or informational interviews to assist with career ideas exploration and decision making
- Career or professional development workshop places ,or offers of venues, catering and /or resources.
- Financial donations for specific re-training and career development purposes.
Please contact us if you feel you are able to offer support.
